It started with a road trip. "As a little girl, the spark that ignited my love for travel came from something simple, a family road trip in our trusty VW Kombi. The journey started with dates, Mom’s calm organizing and preparing, she'd guide us as we packed our bags while Dad made sure the Kombi was ready to go - safe and sound for our family of seven, set for adventure. We'd leave well before sunrise when the house was hushed and traffic was light. Dressed and excited, we'd carry our luggage out to Dad, who was a master at packing, making sure that every item had its place. We each had our own little entertainment kit which included special snacks and then we'd climb up and into the Kombi while negotiating over who would claim the best seat! And then we were off... into the silent night, our road trip had begun.
I often couldn’t sleep, I had to stay awake to watch the journey unfold, I needed to marvel at the beautiful changing light, the bright moon, the road signs, I needed to see all the bridges we crossed, the names of the rivers and the signs stating how many kilometres to go to the next little town, the road markings, the wild animals sprinting in front of the Kombi, the sizes of the towns, the differences in their characters - everything was alive, everything was new.
We would stop at a picnic site on the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere, to devour Mom’s delicious sandwiches and be warmed by her tasty flask-coffee. We’d excitedly chat, Dad would stretch his legs and re-focus for the next part of the journey; the silence of the beautiful wilderness was loud and booming, the smell of the countryside bush was pungent, I couldn’t wait to be seated again, positioned at the window, to soak in the splendour of the wilderness and watch the countryside flash by.
Years later, my first solo backpacking trip abroad taught me something different, I thought that travelling with a backpack would mean minimal packing, minimal gear and that all would be lighter than travelling with a suitcase - how wrong could I have been! On ‘day one’ of my journey I realized the empty pack on its own was too heavy. My trip was cumbersome, the bulk was bothersome, I was more unfit than I’d realized, my focus was on planning routes based on how far I wouldn't have to walk! Still, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip yet my heavy load made everything harder and more stressful for me and at times, it distracted me from the joy and exhilaration I'd hoped to feel. Over the years, I fell into the same trap again and again - especially when road-tripping with my car: if there was space, I'd fill it! I packed what I might need...for...just in case.
Life and travel have changed, I now live with the onset of spinal issues and with age has come a deeper awareness of what truly matters. These days I'm on a mission to lighten my load in every sense, whether it's a local road trip, an international journey or life's emotional baggage, I now pack less and value ease over excess:)
